Hanscotte railsystem as show in the layout ‘La Baraque’
To climb the mountain, some extra adhesion was necessary and it was decided to use the Hanscotte system. Two sets of horizontal weels on the loco and one set under the carriages. They were driven by a chain from the nearby axles of the loco. These wheels had brakes as well for extra security. Tjis is the reason that the loco was always on front of the train and not – as usual – on the valley-side.
In my model I have the system installed but not working!
The simple diagram shows this system.
